MAGISTRATE'S COURT
BREACHES OF THE DEFENCE ACT. Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., presided at yesterday's sittings of the Magistrate's Court, wlicn several youths wore charged with offences under the Defence Act. Two senior cadets —Leonard William Fuller* and Ernest John O'Brien —pleaded guilty to having made a. falso declaration as to age in applying for admission to the Territorial Forces. Both accused.stated thatthev desired to serve (lie Empire, and hoped to' bo accepted for service by joining the Territorials. They liad been refused permision to enlist from tho ranks of the cadets, and they thought that the end they desired to achieve justified the means they used to gain admission to the higher branch of the service. Tho Magistrate pointed out to tlie accused that the declaration inado by them was equivalent to perjury, but as their record in_ tho cadets \ras excellent he would convict and discharge them on this occasion. ■ For failure to attend drill, members of the Territorial Forces wero fined as follow: —Arthur G. W. Love, 205., and 7s. costs; William Gaudin, 10s., and 7s. costs; Halver Anderson, 10s., and 7s. costs; Francis Joseph IS oyer, 55., and 7a. costs. ■
Walter P. Sprowell was discharged with a caution for failing to bo present at certain parades, as lie had been absent for a sound reason,(jbut had omitted to obtain leavo. BY-LAWS BROKEN. On a chargo of sweeping tho street footpatli during prohibited hours, Wollf lilacs was fined on., and ordered to pay court costs amounting to 7s. Lloyd Fletcher was fined os., with costs 75., for leaving a vehiole unattended without chaining tho wheel. Arthur Mason, who failed to slow down the pace of his vehicle, when founding a street corner, was fined 55., with, costs 7s. Edward Osl>orno, who drove through the streets after dark on a rccont evening without having a lighted lamp on his cart, was fined 10s., with costs 7s. The capture of wandering stock in various City and suburban districts resulted in tho following persons being fined as owners thereof:—J. W. Bowes, Ms., and costs 75.; Stoneham and Oxenliam, 10s., costs 9s. and witness's oxpenses 45.; John. Poppleton, 55., and costs 75.; Edward Brooks, 55.,' and costs 75.; Peter Bestos, 55., and costs 7b. TRUANCY. Charles Paterson was fined os., with costs 75., on each of two charges of failing to send' children to school. The following wero also fined 55., with costs 75., for breaches of tho samo law:— Cecil'Gould, Michael Quinn, and Francis IT.. Teddy. OTHER CASES. An elderly offender, named Elizabeth Russell, pleaded guilty to a charge of theft of a lady's dress valued at £4. Sho was fined £4, in default to undergo a month's imprisonment in the Napier Gaol. For importuning, Sarah Goodwin was sentenced to a month's imprisonment.
