WAR LEAGUE
A largo and enthusiastic meeting of tho acting executive of the War League was held in Mr. C. R. Smith's office last evening. There were present: Mr. H. i\ Von Haast (in the chair), His Worship the Mayor, the- Hon. J. G. W. Aitken, M.L.G., Captain Barclay, Messrs. James Macintosh, Jolly, A. .11. Atkinson, C. K. Smith, Captain Simsoii, J. J. M'Gratli, A. Marryatt, S. A. Atkinson, and Professor Hnnter. Mr. Von Haast reported that the recent deputation to tho Prime Minister had urged that the age for enlistment should bo increased to 45, and that thß standard of height he reduced. He was pleased to see that in the new proposals of the Government these two suggestions had been includod. Captain Barclay _ made a report as to rccruiting at the Town Hall, showing that there had been 216 registrations, including 6S whose papers had not yet been returned from the doctors. A discussion ensiled as to the best method of aiding the recruiting movement, and on the motion of Mr. C. R. Smith four subcommittees were set tip to deal with various phases of tho question and to report to a meeting next Friday evening. _ The Mayor intimated that a patriotic meeting was'to be held next Thursday, Trafalgar Day, at the Town Hall, at 8 p.m., and the executive placcd its services at the disposal of tho Mayor for.this purpose.
