A NEWTOWN EYESORE.

Sir,—There is a sad eyesore in tlio heart of Newtown —a waste of most neglected land on 1 either side of the entranco to the Hospital grounds. Each piece is over an acre in extent; the south part belongs to the Hospital Board, the north part to the Government. You seo along tho street' line the remains of an old broken-down fence, "the relic of old decency." The surfaco, in hummocks and littered with gorse hushes and debris, rominds one of a deserted gold diggings —the general appearance of little crcdit to either Hospital Board or Government. Its state is mado to look more forlorn by contrast with the trim lawns of tho Museum grounds opposite to it, and tho woll-kept Hospital gardens behind. On two Hospital visiting days in each week visitors to patients from all the City and the surrounding country pass by this ! desolate area. During tho Christmas holidays crowds of people will

bo tripping via the new Constable Street extension trai.iline to Lyall Bay, and also to Island Bay. Surely Government and Hospital Board could co-operate to, without much expense, make these areas presentable until such time as they were needed for some definite purpose.—l am, etc.. AMENITY.
