RED GROSS FUND.

Sir, —In your issue this morning I notice that I-lis Excellency tlio Governor has received a cablegram from the Marquis of Lansdowne, informing him that "in view of the growing demand, both in Franco and the Near East, it is necessary to make a general appeal for assistance in money for lied Gross purposes, and asking for the assistance of tho Dominion to co-operate with all other dependencies of the Crown in a. street collection on October 21—the collection to be devoted entirely to relieving sick and wounded soldiers and sailors from Home. Lord Lansdowne adds that this appeal has' been found necessary on account of the increase of British and oversea forces at the front, with a naturally corresponding increase m expenditure. He-also adds that Their Majesties the King and Queen, and Her Majesty Queen Alexandra, are giving their gracious patronage. On receipt of this appeal- His Excellency consulted the Ministers on tho question, with the result that the proposal is being laid before the people of the Dominion. His Excellency, wishes it mado quite clear that this appeal on behalf of the lied Cross emanates, from the l/iiiied Kingdom, and is for money only. It has occurred to my mind that Those who have the interests of i.he Red Cross at heart may. possibly gather that should the money collected be sent to St! John's Gate, London, it will not be distributed for the benefit of r-be forces from New Zealand. In case this idea might bo correct, it is as well 10 let it bo known that from direct communication received from the K-ed Cross in England, it has been definitely stated that any money collected for Ued Cross purposes in tho "Dominion will bo forwarded direct to where it will buiicfit our own men. I trust this will make it clear to those willing to subscribe.—l am, etc., ' RED CROSS "WORKER. Christchurch, October 12.
