TROOPS MOVE TO MAYMORN
HOT SHOWERS AT TRENTHAM
There wero over 3000 men in Trentham Camp yesterday, thoir numbers including tlie officers and. N.0.0.'s of tlio Tenth' Reinforcements. Under ordinary circumstances these officers would not have gone into camp until next week, but -under tlie new scheme of sending men into camp every month it was necessary that they'should begin their training somewhat earlier. The mailt body of men in camp were the Third and Fourth Battalions of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade; a few mounted men of the Ninth Reinforcements also went into camp this week, though they wero riot due nntil next Tuesday.
: This morning there will be something of an exodus from Trentham, as the Third and Fourth Battalions of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade will march out to Maymorn Camp, where they will remain for several weeks under canvas..Fatiguo parties left Trentham for Maymorn by train yesterday, afternoon to make pre-, paratioiis for the incoming of over 2000 men. The Ninth Reinforcements willgo into camp in drafts from'various districts: between Monday' and Thursday of next week, and the mounted men of tho Ninths "will, move on to Tauhermikaunext Friday. ' • Hot Shower Baths. .
Some .of the. men in camp enjoyed tho luxury of: a" hot shower bath.in the now, camp bathroom yesterday. The building,' which' is now complete, but has not yet been-lianded over .by. the contractor; 1 stands near the'parade ground, at the end'of one of the camp , streets. The central portion of it carries above it atower containing six large tanks, which are filled with cold water from the camp reservoir in tho hills. In the shed behind the building is a powerful steam boiler. Steam that is generated in it is carried in insulated pipes to four of the tanks in the tower and, by means of "an injector, is introduced into the water, rapidly raising the temperature to nearly boiling point. In. two of the tanks the water is allowed to remain cold. On either side of the central tower are the bathrooms. In each of them thero is a leng narrow central compartment with concreto floor and fifty showers, arranged in doublo rows above it. Either hot or cold water may be turned on at will. Dressing-rooms adjoin oh each side of the bathroom proper. In these the men will be able to undress and dress without in any way interfering with those who are revelling in the hot 6howers. Great satisfaction is expressed by both officers and men at the completion of this much-desired bathing accommodation. Hitherto many men havo had to maroh to the river, more, than a mile away, to enjoy a dip.
Cool Meat and Milk. Another improvement which has just been finished is a. new meat and milk store, which has been designed to keep these important articles of diot-coo] and fresh. The building is alongside the railway siding; opposite the big forage store. In one' compartment there are wide channels in tho concrete floor, in which the milk-cans stand in running water. If this is found to bo insufficient to keep the milksweet, in hot weather,' sprays of water aro to be thrown from pipes along the wall. • Next to this dairy is an open cemented shed in. which milkcans are ■washed before being returned by rail to the supplier. Every morning milk and meat come into the caap by train, and aro quickly transferred to the new buildings. The butcher's shop and cool 6toro are both as clean as the dairy, and throughout the building louvres, or shutters, of.wood, which may be opened or closed, are. set in tho wails, whilo close wire gauge is placed inside tho louvres to keep out insects.
Contented Soldiers. ; The men ivlio went into camp this freek arc already 'dropping into tho camp routine and picking up the ethics of soldiering. The n.c.o.'s who have them in hand, under the guidance of commissioned officers, are patient and thorough in explaining the various movements, which ore long will ho "child's play" to the men. In spite of tho) newness of things and the awkwardness which recruits imist naturally experience at first, the men express complete satisfaction with their quarters and all else pertaining to tho camp. There is little doubt that Trenthani camp is in really first-class order. Camp Appointments.
