THE ANTI-TREATING LAW IN LIQUOR BARS
ITS FIRST DAY IN LONDON. Br WeffMph—Press Association—Copyright London, October 11. The no-treating liquor law was enforced in London on Monday. Thero are seven thousand hotels and. three thousand off-licensed houses. Innumerable ruses were adopted by tho public to defeat tho new order. Being liable to a penalty of £100 or six months' imprisonment, tho hotelkeepers adhered to the strict reading of the regulation.
Most people were disposed to treat Me matter as a joke. Customers evaded tlie intention of the order bv exchanging money when entering or leaving tho bars. Treating being allowed with meals, there is hopeless disagreement at the lunch bars as to wliother sandwiches, or bread and cheese constitute a meal. It is believed that the regulation will bo effective, inasmuch as it will minimise the treating: of soldiers.
