CONVALESCENT CAMPS
The Hon. G. W. Russell (Minister in Charge of Hospitals) states that the same policy that 1 has been laid down and followed up till the present in disposing woundcc! soldiers in hospitals will be followed in regard to the men returning by the Willochra and the lofua to Port Chalmers, 'flio hospital casps will be sent to those hospitals ■which are nearest to their own homes, provided always that the equipment and stalling of those hospitals are adequate for the treatment of tho patients. Serious surgical cases will all be sent to tho bigger hospitals in the cities. Others will bo sent to convalescent stations at Rotorua and Hanmer, and a large number of the men will return to their own homes. Arrangements for the transport by sea and land of the soldiers from Port Chalmers to their several destinations will be under tho supervision of tho Defence Department.
"The acoommodation at Rotorua Sanatorium, 1 ' said Mr. Russell, "will soon be sufficient for seventy men, and tho work of erecting a convalescent camp on Pukeroa- Hill is now being pushed ahead with energy. At' Hanmer the Lodge has been placed by Mr. Duncan Rutherford under the control of the Government for the first portion of the convalescent station at Hanmer. Extra accommodation and extra staffing ut P roy ided as the station develops. "I am pleased to say that money is coming in freely for these convalescent stations. 1 have to day received information that the Wairarapa district is contributing £100 to tho fund.
