The news from the great war theatres to-day is in parts serious.
and in other respects most cheering and inspiring. The gallant Ser- , bians, attacked both front and rear, are inflicting sharp blows on their enemies, the Bulgarians in particular receiving a rude shock to their vanity. Nevertheless, the Serbian crisis, it is stated, is gravej the pressure is severe, and the Allies are entreated to act quickly! Well over 100,000 troops: will • have disembarked by the time these lines appear. . Rumania is reported .to have sold her harvest to Germany, and Greece still remains neutral—the Allies' two hopes! The best news of the day comes' from the Eastern theatre, whero the Russians have achieved successes of great strategic value, the cffects of which are already beginning to be noticed. The indications are that the Russians are now ip. a position to take the initiative on a vast scale. Heavy fighting is proceeding on the Western front, and from the reported statements of. German war correspondents in the Champagne region—which have trickled through via Copenhagen—the signs and portents characteristic of the imminence of another big French / offensive lave been noted.
