VARICOSE VEINS
HOW THEY 'AFFECT RECRUITS., Suggestions were made by members in the House yesterday, that tlm restrictions against men with varicose veins who wished to enlist should be lessened,
The Minister of Defence (tlio Hon. J. Allen) _ said that the matter was purely a medical one, and lie could only bo ou' tho reports of the medical authorities.
Dr. Newman (Wellington East) thought that, the medical authorities might bo consulted on the matter. He understood that men wero rejected for varicose veins when there was no need for it. He thought that if a mail had varicose veins below the knee he could stand the strain very well. Mr. Allen: The matter has been looked into more than oiice; and I feel hound to consider tho advice of General Henderson.
Dr. Newman-: He didn't give you that advice, did lie? Mr. Allen: The lion, member seems to know more about it than I do. Dr. Newman : Probably I do. Mr. Allen said that all men with varicose veins wore not rejected. Some were asked to have them removed. Ho added that the matter was not being lost sight of.
Mr. T. A. H. Field (Nelson) asked ui© Minister if lie would lay beforo General Henderson a letter from a committee of Nelson doctors, pointing out the absurdity of the restrictions. . The Minister agreed to do this.
