RED CROSS FUNDS
AN APPEAL FROM HOME. His .Excellency the Governor has forwarded the following for publication:— "I have received a tolegram from the Marquis of Lansdowne, K.G;, informing me tliat in view of the growing demand both in France. and the Near East it is necessary to make a general appeal for assistance in money for Red Gross purposes, and- he has, therefore, asked me whether this Dominion will assist in company with all the other dependencies of the Crown in organising street and other collections throughout New Zealand on October 21. .
"The . , money received from this general appeal will .bo devoted entirely to relieving our sick' and wounded soldiers and sailors- from Home and overseas at the various seats of war.
"Lord Lansdowne goes on to say: 'From all parts of "the King's Dominions ive have already received generous assistance in our work, but with the increase of British and overseas forces at the front there is a corresponding increase in our expenditure, and we shall be truly grateful to you if you will help us by organising an-appeal for the object which I have named. Their Majesties tho King arid Queen and Her Majesty Queen Alexandra are giving us their gracious patronage, and I trust that you will also be able to see your way to help us.' . "I accordingly consulted my Ministers on the question, and they concurred in the proposal to lay this telegram before the people of these islauds. While gladly according the patronage and support asked for by Lord Lansdowne, I desire to make it clear that this appeal emanates from the United Kingdom.
"No goods hi kind are called for. "All contributions should be sent to the Under-Secretary for Internal Affairs, Wellington, and I will then according to the instructions give directions for the amounts to be forwarded to St. John's Gate, London, while at the same time informing, His Majesty the King. "LIVERPOOL, "Governor."
