COMMERCIAL DEFENCE FUND
NO ACTION TAKEN,
The following resolution regarding the establishment by each Chamber of Commerce ih the Dominion of a Commercial Defence Fund was adopted at the conference of New Zealand Chambers of Commerce held last month.
"That in the opinion of this ponferenco. it is desirable that each Chamber of Commerce throughout the Dominion should establish a commercial defence fund for the following purposes(a) To'bring or defend, or tssist in bringing or defending, legal actions in 'matters of general commercial interest.: (b) To. obtain legal opinions on matters of general, commercial interest, (c) To bring back or assist in bringing back to the Dominion absconding debtors. 11 This letter was considered at the meeting of thj .council of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce held yesterday afternoon. '.
Mr. T. Ballinger moved that the principle involved in the- setting up of such a committee be'approved; .This was not seconded.
Mr. W. Bridson said that the whole thing was too .nothing specific in it. It might bo all right to those . dealing in butter and cheese,' but the'importers wore; prepared to fight their own cases.
: Mr. 0. Jones suggested that members of the Chamber might be'circularised asking them if they wished to become members of such a fund, at a subscription of £1 Is. per annum, but he declined to make'a motion oriiis suggest tion.
The chairman said that it seemed to. be the opiniou of the council that no action bo takon, and no action was accordingly taken.
