COOK OF THE NORTH POLE

An American named Curtis Allen, who has ; arrived at San : Francisco, that Dr. F. A. Cook, the alleged discoverer of .tho North Pole, was arrested and imprisoned at Rangoon. Mrj Allen; alleges that ho shared a cell with Dr. ,Cook. The British authorities believed him (Allen) to be a German, acting in conjunction with Cook, and.threatened to hang. him.
[Dr. ,F. A. Cook startled the whole world some ago, by announcing —and convincing quite a largo body of opinion in the scientific world—that lie had discovered the North. Pole. He was denounced by Peary,' who arrived back from his Arctic expedition not very long after with indisputable proofs of the success of the Peary expedition.
