, ! ' . .LOCAL NOTES. V' The annual handicap tourney of the Wellington. South Chess Club is rapidly approaching completion. ilr. D. i?urclias, the scratch player, is leading .'frith 7 clear wins. His unfinished game with Mr. Berry lias, however, so far gone against him. Should .he lose this game he will be only half a point ahead of Messrs. Armstrong, A. Clark, and Harper, . who are at present sharing second place. The next best tally is that ef Mr. H. Douglass, 7-j wins 31 losses. . Members are looking forward with much interest to the tenth annual .match with : the representatives'. of' the. Wellington Working Men's Club, which is 'scheduled for next Monday at the Newtown Public ■Library. Of the nine matches played to date each club has won four, and one ended in a tie.
The labt round of the Working Men's Club's annual handicap tourney is now' being played, but it will be some little time before the various prize-winners can bo announced, as there are a. number of games outstanding from earlier. rounds to be disposed of. The best tallies so far are as follow:—Peake, wins loss-is; Key, B—2; Feafonby, GJ—3{; Burgess, G—4; Barnes, 5—2; and Larking,' >-4. 'Mr. -Featonby has been elected as a delegate' to the New Zealand Chess Association, in place'of Mr. Milesi, who has left Wellington. 1 " . The Wellington Chess Club's match against the Sububs' team was advanced a further stage last week. Wins for the Suburbs were scored by Messrs. W. Mackay, Fouhy, Frethey, and Laughfcon, while tho game, Godtschalk v. MacKenzie, was drawn. Tho tally is now 154 to 1H in favour of tho Suburbs, and there are 23 outstanding games, to be..disposed r.f in the next three weeks.
A.match' is in progress for rung 3 on the club's ladder between .W. Mackay (challenger) and P. Still. The first two games were drawn, the third was won by Maclcay, and the fourth stands adjourned : 'at an":.interesting .stage. In a ■•match for tho cnampionship of 'the NgaioClub between W, Carman (challenger and Topp (defender) tho former has started well, ivinnning the first game and drawing tho second. Two matches were played last month in the Wairarapa, South v beating North on each occasion. Four Congress players took part in these matches, of whom Mr. Or. A. Jones (Masterton) was the only ona to win both his games. Rev. Compton, late of Wellington, who has been infusing new life into the chess circles of South Wairarapa, also notched a win on each occasion. ~
