| Garden Party at Karori. On Saturday afternoon a garden party was given at "Horaewood,' 1 Karori, tho residence of the lion. C. J. Johnston, Speaker of the Legislative Council, ana Mrs. Johnston. Many guests were present, and after their reception by Air. and: Mrs. Johnston several played croquet or else walked about tho garden, an orchestra stationed outSide playing at intervals during tho afternoon. Mrs. Johnston wore a black and white gown with a wide black hat. Opening of the Academy of Fine Arts. ■ Saturday was a day of many events, as all or most of the different clubs for golf, tennis, bowling, etc., were opening for the season. In such circumstances it was hardly surprising that there was not a very large attendance at the opening of too annual exhibition of the Academy of Fine Arts, particularly as the weather was so perfect for outdoor attractions. During the opening ceremony the Hon. Mr. Russell explained a very interesting scheme by means of which artists all over New Zealand may help the Wounded Soldiers' Funds. In addition to the pictures, among which were to be seen some interesting studies, there was a display of arts and crafts, some of tho enamel work being delightful. Aftermodelling was also interesting. Afternoon tea was much appreciated, for looking at pictures in some vvay or another inevitably' creates a desire for tea.' Among those who w;ere present were Mrs. Gore, the wife of the president, Miss D. K.. Richmond, the Bishop of Wellington (Dr. Sprott3, and Mrs: Coleridge, Mr. and Mrs. C. L. Wilson, Mrs. Salmond, Mrs. Reading, Mrs. L. H. B. Wilson, Mr. Atkins, Mr. Killick, Air. Ellis.

.Miss Grapes, present ;holder of the Bcurlco Cup, won the putting competition 'at the Johnsonville Golf Club 011 Saturday, and so retained the cup for i another year. Mrs. Hirsehberg and Miss Price tied for second place.
