ON H.M.S. PHILOMEL
GIFTS FROM NEW ZEALAND / WELCOMED, v "We seem to be fated to remain in tlie hottest parts of the earth," writes Captain Hall Thompson, of H.M.§. Philomel, 'in a letter just received by the Dcfcnce Minister. Captain Hall Thompson reports that tho officers and men of the Philomel have had a most trying time, but that under the circumstances the healfh of the men has been remarkably good. He acknowledges receipt of certain gifts from New . Zcahyiicj, and expresses the qxtreme gratitude of the whole ship's company to the thoughtful people in New Zealand who have sent them. A supply of butter was especially appreciated, for it arrived iu good condition, but" asupply of apples did not arrive in such good shape. xYfter-their long journeying, a number were spoiled, but the Bound ones were very good, and were much enjoyed. These men on our little fighting ship have been doing very valuable work in a part of the world where conditions of life -,are most trying, and it would appear that any generosity to the men on tile part of the New Zealand people is generosity very well placed.
