NEW YORK FREIGHTS. Reporting on 6hipping at New York, under date August 27, a well-known firm states;—" The outlook is not at all favourable for any cheaper freights in the future. On the contrary, there is a possibility that rates may be -avanced. Without, doubt a vast amount of tonnage • will ho required to transport our surplus crops to Europe, ee well as the large amount of munitions of war that arc now being manufactured in this country, and to supply this tonnage-will tako a large number of pteomcrs that are usually engaged ffi regular ' business and on regular lines. Owners arc realising the present position, and taking advantage .of it, and; are -unwilling •to charter their steamers unless at extreme rates, and much -prefer the shorter voyages with quick turns than long voyage business. Charter rates have already materially advanced, and indications .point to very strong 'markets for the ooming four to six months. . As yet no changes .have been made in freight rates on merchandise, and we are hoping the lines, will not feel the necessity to make any advtuices, but should charters go to a higher basis freight rates will undoubtedly .follow.
