ACCIDENTS AND FATALITIES
• INJURED BY AN EXPLOSION. A. married man named Carol Sinclair, thirty years of ago, living at Miramar, and employed by the Gas Company there, was admited to the Hospital yesterday afternoon suffering from severe injuries to his face and hands through the explosion of an ammonia tank at tne company's works while he was engaged: in doing some welding .by tho acetone process. •
WATERSIDE WORKER DROWNED. ' By Telegraph.—Press .Association. . ' ■ Auckland, September 27. Thomas Howarth, a waterside worker, aged tliirty-njne years, was drowned in the harbour on Saturday afternoon, and: •a companion, Robert Alan M'Millan, was severely burned through a fire on the launch. Edward Brown, owner of the launch, states that while the vessel was anchored off Chelsea he 6aw the stem of the vessel in flames, and endeavoured to subduo them. '' Before ho had succeeded he - heard someone say, "Tom Howarthis overboard!" He reversed the engine, and steered to where Howarth was seen to be struggling in the water. Motherwell, one of the party, jumped overboard'and seized Howarth, and endeavoured to got him to the launch, but both sank. Motherwell alone rose to the surface,. and was pulled aboard the launch much exhausted'. The launch oruised about :till all. hope of the recovery of Howarth had to be abandoned. Howarth was a- married man. His wife and two children reside in England. ■ The,fire. on. the launch was caused by Howarth having filled a kettle from a tin of benzine,, believing it to be water. While he was standing near the fire with, the kettle in his hands the benzine flared into his face, and he jumped overboard to save himself from burning.
DROWNED WHILE-FISHING. , i . ..Auckland, September 27. Frederick Ernest Farley, aged fiftyeight, brother of C. T. Farley, .. proprietor of tie boardinghouso at Kaiekare, on the West Coast, was drowned while fishing off the rocks on the beach. He was taken unawares by an unusually high wave, and slipped into/ deep water, .striking his head on a rock .as ho fell. His son Frederick, aged twentyfcur, dived into the water and seized his father, and for two hours struggled- to assist him back-to-,the rock.. Finally lie was forced to '. loose his hold of his father, and with difficulty struggled to safety himself; Frederick was found by a cousin hanging on to a rock, quite exhausted, and . so bruised that he was unable to walk. - •
THE DEATH OF ALFRED 'AUSTIN. Dunedin, September 27. - An .inquest on the remains found at Purakauui on Saturday was held. at Port Chalmers this afternoon. The body-could not be identified, but the evidence given led to the belief that the remains- were those of Alfred Arthur Austin, an assistant chemist, who disappeared'on May 16,1914. Austin was a.maried man living in. South Dunedin, and the last , seen of 1 him was at Port Chalmers one. Saturday evening. He had a crib at Waitati..-•The-Coroner returned a verdict that the remains were those of Alfred Austin and .that ho' died some time in 1914. -' ' 1 -
FATAL FALL FROM A STAGING. Auckland, September 27. 'Alexander . , M'Kenzie, a wharf labourer, fell-from -a .staging on the collier Waitonio into the water,' striking the side of a hulk' heavily. He sustained injuries which resulted in his death while being conveycd'to the Hospital. ■ SUICIDE IN A HOSPITAL. . DROWNING FATALITY. AT PATEA. _ Wa'nganui, September 27. A married man named Angus Macintosh M'Leod was drowned on the Patca Bar yesterday owing to a boat* swamping. Four other'occupants of the boat got ashore safely. Deceased was 36 years of age. He leaves a wifo and seven children., The body has not been recovered,. RETURNED SOLDIER. KILLED. . Wanganui, September 27. Til© body, of Corporal Comyns, a yoiung man just returned invalided from the Dardanelles, was found, oil the railway line near Okoia early 1 this morning It is supposed deceased- fell fpm a tram on Saturday night, and was' probably killed instantly. Deceased left with the Main Body, and was invalided on account of deafness. Ho was well known and very popular, and his terrible end has caused a great shock.
