LAWN TENNIS

THE WELLINGTON' CLUB. ■The annual report of tho Wellington Lawn Tennis Club states that the season just passed has proved one of the most successful in tho history of the club. Twenty-one new members were elected during the summer season, and 24 joined during the winter months. Tho bal-. ance-«heet indicates that the finances of the club are entirely satisfactory. During the year £15 on debentures wero repaid, and there is a cash, balance of £60 12s. 9d. in haind. Members have shown great enthusiasm in the various club tournaments, no less than thirteen having been played. These have sustained interest, improved the standard of. play, and rendered tlie game more pleasurable. The following members have joined one or otlier of the various expeditionary forces for service beyond the seas:—J. D. Harper, R. O'Hara Smith, A. Boddington, G. W. Clinkard, N. G.. Henley, T. Lawle'ss, F. F. Marshall, and F. W. Crombie. The following also have enlisted and- are duly awaiting their call: —F. Corroll, 11. Swinburne, and 15. Earnshaw. Tho club's best wis'hes attend those who havo §one aiid-aro about to go upon the King's service. Tho death of Mr. Ghas. T. Rout deprived tho club of one of its esteemed vice-presidents. Mr. Rout was one of the club's founders and one of its most energetic members, having till the time of .his death the keenest .interest in the club's welfare and ■prosperity. The sympathy of members has gone out to Mrs. Rout and her family. The committee desire gratefully to acknowledge trophies and donations from Messrs. Alcock Co., Ltd., Jacques and Co., Ltd. (ber E. W. Mills and Co., Ltd.), Dr. W. Young, and Mrs. Young, A. J. Fernie, W. D. Irons, and K. Isaacs. In tho departure of Mr. F. W. Crombie to the front tho plub is losing one to whom the committee feel much 'of the success of tho past, and, indeed, previous years, is due. Mr. R. J. Grant lias also gone into camp, and the club is losing the services of a very ablo treasurer. Tho presence of these two'and the others named abovo will be greatly missed during the coming season. Tho trophies won at the various tournaments during the past season will bo presented at the annual meeing. The season will he opened on Saturday. October 9, when members and their friends will be cordially welcomed.
