N. 2.5. COAS STEAMERS. On Sunday last the New Zealand Shipping Company's Ruapehu left Plymouth for Wellington, via Auckland. She i 6 due here about November 15, and will subsequently visit Lyttelton and Dunedin. Under charter to the New Zealand Shipping Company, the Shaw-Savill liner Mamari left Montreal on September 20 for Australian and New Zealand ports. Wellington should be reached aboiut the first week in December. An expected arrival at London to-day is the steamer Ruahine. She left Teneriffe, in continuation of her journey from Wellington on Saturday last. The Tongariro, which left Wellington on July 24 for London, via Albany and Durban, left Teneriffc on Sunday? She is duo Home on Friday or Saturday nest. KAIKOURA AT SYDNEY. The local agents for the F. and S. Line havo been advised that their chartered steamer Kaikcura arrived at Sydney from Liverpool on Tuesday. She is cxpect-cd to leave there for Wellington, via Auckland, on Saturday next, and is due at this port about Octobcr 8. SURUGA'S ROUGH HANDLING. An arrival at th-s port of Wellington yesterday morning from New York, via Panama Canal, was the chartered steamer Suruga. The vessel, which has come down on behalf of the Barber Line, for whom Mr. G. Scales is local agent, experienced particularly heavy weather. Departure was taken from New York on August 8. To the Canal the voyage was uneventful, but slips in the Culebra Cut caused the vessel ,to •he delayed. Clearing the Canal the Suruga ran into heavy weather, and this gradually increased until on September 10 a violent hurricane was encountered. Those on board had a most trying time, and the vessel was hove-to for about nino hours. Gale after gale was met, but the Suruga•behaved well, mailing good headway. Two days ago another violent southerly gale caused the vessel to be hove-to for eight hours, during which time hugo seas continuously broke over tfe vessel. Throughout the whole voyage the Suruga stood the. tests very well, and made her Appearance in port at 7 a.m. yesterday, apparently little the worse ,for the severe buffeting. On one occasion one of the ship's peta (a monkey) was washed, overboard, but was fortunately rescued when another big . sea swept over the vessel. Captain D. M. Nicholl is in charge of the Suruga, and has the following officers associated with him:—Chief, Mr. J. Hansen; second, Mr. W. Avideon; third, Mr. H. B. Fluck; chief engineer, Mr. J. N. Ander.son; second, Mr. E. Bunting third, Mr. H. Collins; fourth, Mr; R. J. S. Kennedy. Her crow- consists of 36. Olninesc.

As the Suruga lias explosives on board, the local portion of her cargo is being brought to Wellington wharves in lighters. .She is expected to Ret away for Sydney about Saturday next.

Mr. W. Paul has rejoiucd the Arahura 06 chief officer. Captain W. J. Carey, of the Komato, has been appointed to talis charge of tho Mapourika on har arrival at Wellington to-day. Captain T. B. Captain Oamerou will probably take charge of tho Mararoa. The Anchor Line's steamer Waimea, is due at, Wellington from Onehunga to-day for the purpose of being placed on tho Patent Slip for overhaul. As discharge of • the Pictoni portion of tho- Karori's Newcastle coal will not bo completed before this afternoon, the vessel will not arrive at Wellington before to-morrow morning. Advice has been received by the local office of the Union Company stating that the Maniika will not leave Sydney for Wellington till to-morrow. She is due hero on Tuesday next. Tho Union steamer Corinna is en route from New Plymouth to Dunedin direct. She will arrive here frdm southern ports early next week. About 233 tons. of Auckland cargo will bo landed at WoHington by tho Trtrawera before sho proceeds on to southern ports to-morrow. ■ Continuing her journey from Greymouth the Mapourika. lfeft Wcstport at 8 a.m. yesterday. She will make a call at Nelson and is due here this morning. On Saturday next the New Zealand Ship- • ping Company's Ashburton is expected to leavo Montreal for New Zealand port«, via Panama Canal.
