MASSACRE AND OUTRAGE IN ASIA MINOR
VISCOUNT BRYOE APPEALS TO AMERICANS: By Telegraph—Press Association—Oopyxisht _' New York, September 20. Viscount Bryce has issued an appeal to the American people to stop tha slaughter of the Armenians, »r at least to protest against tbe' wholesale massacres wliich are proceeding in Asia Minor. Women seized for the -.Turkish! harems are compelled to become Moslems'; many are driven to the deserts of Arabia and Syria.:' Over ten thousand Armenians have been drowned in Trebizond. A quarter of a million Armenians have escaped to Russia. • The Italian Consul vouches for the facts of the Trebizond massacre.

Viscount : Bryce's letter appealing to America to assist, in stopping the-, Armenian atrocities, adds: "The Turks'relentless cruelty is extirpating the Christian Armenians. They have not rebelled. Unarmed men of military agehave been, killed; convoys of Turkish, soldiers, consisting largely of released 1 criminals,-, are driving old men and' women to unhealthy parts of the" desert. Many, !have been murdered, and the road is strewn with corpses. All will, perish sooner or later. "The Italian Coubul describes one scene: 'The troops drove ten thousand Armenians on the Trebizond shore, placed them in boats, took them out to sea, and threw them overboard, drowning them all—men, women, and children.' ' "In some) cases Armenians are saved by accepting Islam, but half a million have been slaughtered, and the deported people are now dying of disease and starvation. Germany i alone can end the massacres.. Armenia should persuade Germany to exercise her influence to stop this'ghastly work."
