A CALAMITOUS CONTROVERSY
London, September 19. Lord Selborno, - speaking at Norwich, said that Lord Kitchener had consented to exempt skilled agriculturists from enlisting. He warned 'tho public to believe little of .what they saw in the papers regarding national service. Tho present controversy was a. national calamity. FRENCH OPINIONS ON THE OUTLOOK KITCHENER'S WONDERFUL ACHIEVEMENT ("Times" and Sydney "Sun" Services.), _ London, September 19. Hie "Times" correspondent in Paris says tho recent speeches of Mr. Asquith and Lord Kitchener at the opening of tlio British Parliament havo produced tho most favourable impression. Tho stern resolution is expressed that France must continue the war to the end, despite tho sacrifices that havo been made. Tho speeches aro regarded as a fresh augury of victory. French opinion concerning the British achievements is crystallised in a remarkable article in the "Temps." An ungrudging tribute is paid to Britain's magnificent effort during the first year of tho war. The paper says: ''Lord Kitchener has accomplished an enormous work, unprecedented in history, with remarkable method and clearness of vision."
