Tho-most serious fire since'lßßß occurred in South Norsswood yesterday, when a block of shops and the Salvation Army Barracks were destroyed by fire. A howling gale was blowing; at the time. Tho firo originated in a chimney near t'ho Salvation Army .Barracks, sparks setting firo to tlie barracks, which spread from there to llickett's fruit shop, with a nine-roomed dwelling attached, also to Bartlett's saddler's shop, and a blacksmith and wheelwright's shop,, all owned by Rickets; Mackie's store caught firo, also the Junction Hotel, but the flames in these buildings were suppressed beforo much damago was done. Hulena's furniture store was also destroyed. The Lutheran Hall caught fire, but the flames were extinguished. The Army Barracks and quarters wore insured, and most of tlio othGr places were-covered, but tlie-loss i 3 considerably over the amounts of tho insurances. Had it not been for the efforts of a, bucket brigade, the whole of South NorSowood would havo been destroyed. Tho workers had a trying time, and several were hurt by flying debris, but none seriously. Mackie's storo, saved yesterday, was tho only oue/to escape destruction, in the 1888 firo.
