IS. Allotn, and H. Burton; died of wounds, 1 officer and 33 men; wounded, 15 officers and 207 men, including Driver 0. M. Atkinson, Ptes. R. Miles, W. M. O'Connor (second occasion), and E. D. Sweeney. In hospital in Malta:—lll, 19 officers and 118 men, including Pte. J. M'Quillan; in hospital at Alexandria, Cpl. O. Hudson (dangerously). Missing: I.officer and 8 men.

In this issue will be found an advertisement dealing with a, clever and useful protector and carrier, which Messrs. Young and Collins, Ltd., Wnnganui, are tho patentees; This invention has aroused widespread interest and many letters of inquiry have been received from all paTts of the Dominion. Among these is a lady resident of Rangitikei district, who writes"l have seen your advertisement "of a piece of armour to be worn over tlie heart, and thinlc it seems a very good invention. I have just retvff a letter to the London 'Times,' July 28, on much the same thomo written by Sir Andrew Conan Doyle, and I .thought it would interest him to have a sample. Would you kindly post him one and'send the account,to me. Please put the enclosed card in the parcel, also illustrated printed matter that might interest Sir Arthur Doylo. I enclose his address, so please post direct to him." The "Now York Times" of August '8 is just to hand, from which we clip the following paragraph"Conan Doyle wants tho British troops to wear armour, declaring it would greatly reduce tho casualty lists. He suggests that oach man wear a helmet, a curved plate of highlytempered steel over tho heqrt, and a similar plate over the abdomen." Somo French troops in Flanders are already equipped with helmet and breastplates.
