, BROKEN CROCKERY A VIOLENT HUSBAND IN TROUBLE.: RidbaTd Wickham, wlio had teen separated. from hi 3 wife recently, and had paid her an unannounced visit on Thursday; evening, had as a result the following two charges prefcrrsd against him yesterday (1) Damaging a quantity of crockery valued at 10s., tho property of his wife, "Nellie Wickham; (2) being a person against whom a separation order was made and trespassing on his wife's premises in Ebor btreet. On behalf of complainant, Mr. H. I?. O'Leary 6aid that since WicWham and his wife had been separated the latter heard that he was going to do something desperate. As 'a result, counsel had written to defendant and warned him of tlio consequences of carrying out his threat. Defendant took no heed, and with the warning letter in his pocket visited his wife's house and when refused admittance broke in the door. ' The wife rushed for help, and in the meantime tho husband set to work on the crockery, and after having wrecked nearly everything breakable rushed outside for an axe to start on the furniture. The police 'arrived'and saved tho situation. ,
Tho Magistrate ordered accused to pay the cost of the damage done, 10s., and to pay £1 Is. medical expenses incurred by himself through, injury to his head in breaking into the houso. On the second, charge a fine of .£3, in default one month's imprisonment was imposed, FINED <£125. A Chinese named Lee Gee appeared on remand charged with landing in New Zealand, from the steamer Knight of the Garter, without fulfilling tho requirement) of the Immigration Restriction Aet. Mr. J. P. W. Dickson appeared for tho accused. At the instance of Mr. E. B. Brabaaon, Collector of Customs, the Magistrate imposed a fino of -6125, .£IOO of which, represented tho poll tax which defendant should have paid. Tho alternative was fixed at six months' imprisonment or such time until defendant could bo deported. CRUELTY TO A HOUSE. Cruelly ill-treating a horse was alleged oguinst a cab driver named Arthur Morton. Mr. A. J. Luko appeared for the prosecutors, the S.P.C.A. James Honry. S.P.C.A. Inspector, said that he was on tho Queen's Wharf on the morning of September 8, ichen he caw accused in charge of two horses and a Mib, Oft 1) of tho animals was in very poor condition and absolutely unfit Jpr any jlmM-jofe. • a
bettor condition, but had broken knees. Defendant had teen previously warned. The Magistrato imposed a fine of wG3, with, costs .£1 Bs. OTHER CASES. A' fino of 20a„ in default soveji dare' imprisonment, was imposed on James Milno, who pleaded guilty to stealing a ru» valued at 10s. from Agnes Brown. Frank Join Berstodt Tarrant admitted stealing an overcoat tho property of Collins Gleeson, valued at £4, from the 0 rand Hotel, aud ivas fined 4fe, in default seven days' imprisonment for the same. A wharf labourer named James Miliar was fined 20s„ in default seven days' imprisonment on a charge of receiving a 61b. tin of jam from somo person unknown and knowing it to navo been stolen. For insobriey Alfred Setter was fined 205., in default thrco days' imprisonment, and John Sullivan fined 10s., or 18 hours. BY-LAW BREACHES. For allowing, live stock to wander, the following were penalised as mentioned:—' John Fyfe, fined <£2, with costs 135.; Mrs. Alice Wickinan, 10s., costs 135.; "Win. H. Baldwin JUI, costs 75.; Alfred H. Bradley and Eddie May each fined 10s., costs 75.; and John Peach and Wong Chew each, fined 55., costs 13s. The charge against Joiha Levy of keeping a dog wearing a collar issued in respect to. another dog was dismissed, as there was a doubt regarding the ownership of the animal. A further adjournment to Wednesday next was granted in the civil case, Hunt, Cottrelland Co., Ltd., v. Sutherland and Bankine, a claim for ,£47 12s. Gil. Defendants counter-claimed for <£60.
