RAILWAY INCREASES

TO OPERATE FROM SUNDAY NEXT. Regulations are to bo published in the New Zealand "Gazette" to-day embodying the increases' in the railway rates indicated in the Budget proposals. Tho increases are to be made -under tho Government Railways Act, 1908, and they will como into force on and after Sunday, September 19, 1915. Air-passenger fores from 'that date will be increased. by one penny for every shilling or fraction of a shilling (8 1-3 per cent, increase), with the exceptions of fares, for military forces, workers' twelvo-t:ip commutation tickets, workers' weekly tickets, and tourist excursion tickets. AH charges for parcels, luggage, bicycles, , horses, carriages, motor-cars, dogs, milk, etc;, will be increased 10 per cent., with the following exceptions:—Tabulated parcel rates, checked luggage, lost luggage, left luggage, and left parcels. General and local rates for'conveyance of goods and live-stock (except timber), and all charges for haulage, handling, storage, demurrage, etc., will be subject to the 10 per cent, increase. Fares and rates on the Lake Wakatipu steamers will be increased 8 1-3 per. cent:, and 10 per cent, respectively. ■ The present holiday excursion fares will be cancelled. The existing rate for return exoursion tickots is 2d. per mile, with a minimum of 4s. for first-class, and Id. per mile, with 2s. minimum, for second-class. Under the new rate the minimum rate will be ss. first-class, and 3s. sd. second-class. For 50 miles the rate will be Bs. 6d. first-class and ss. 9d. socond-class, with a corresponding increase according to the . length of the journey. The new rates for tourist excursion tickets will be as follow, the old rate being given in parentheses able over both islands for seven weeks from date of issue, £13 (£10); available over North Island lines for four weeks from date of issue, £8 (£6); available oyer South Island lines for four weeks from date of issuo, £8 (£6). There are slight increases in the loft parcels, checked parcels, etc., rates. .
