MAGISTRATE'S COURT
ALLEGED THEFT OF A DOG A man in uniform name! Robert Ross was charged, on the information of Wm. Henry Trengrove in the Magistrate's .Court yesterday with the theft of a valuable Irish setter pup, the property of the informant. .Ross, who was represented by Mr. T. Neave, pleaded not guilty. Informant's evidence was that the dog wandered from him ,on July 28 last. He advertised for it, and the next day, : ill cohseqnence of information given him, he went to defendant's house and found the dog there. Defendant said that informant's dog and his own dog became friendly on the day in question when they met in tho street. Eventually he had taken the dog home. Efforts had been made to ascertain tho owner of the dog, and oventually when informant came to his house the dog was handed over to him. On accused's bolialf Mr. Neave submitted that his dent's explanation was adequate and satisfactory. Defendant was range warden for the Trentham Headquarters Staff, and bore an excellent character. His Worship said ho felt ho ought to believe Ross's exeplanation. The information would be dismissed.
OTHER CASES. A young man named George John Burberry, alias Frederick George Smith, had tlio following chargcs preferred against him:—ft) Drunkenness; (2) breaking his prohibition order; (3) committing a breach of his probationary license j (1) stealing a silver'thimble valued at 10s. Gd.; (5) entering the Arcadia Private Hotel and stealing a watch valued at Bs. Cd. and. a muff and work basket valued at ,£3 10s. Inspector Uendrey said accused had been found in a room in tho Arcadia Hotel, from which hotel the articles in .question
had been stolen. These artiolcs -n-ero found in tlio room. When accused was arrested and brought to the police station a probationer's licenso ana .a prohibition order ivcre found on him. Accused was convicted and discharged for drunkenness, fined 205., in default three days' gaol for breaking his prohibition, order, and sent to gaol for a month on the third charge. On tho two theft charges accused was remanded to Wednesday next. Leo Gee, a Chinese who was remanded from the previous day on a charge of having landed in New Zealand without having fulfilled tho requirements of the Immigration Kestriction Act, again appeared before the Court, and Mr. .T. F. W. Diclcson asked for leave to reverse the plea of
guilty given tho previous day to one of not guilty. This was agreed to, the accused iieing Temamled for «. week. William Armour was lined £2, with the option of fourteen days' imprisonment for indecency, <md Alexander Hampden, a trooper, lined £3, or olio month, for using obscene language. Both were convicted and discharged for drunkenness. Jlary Jones appeared on remand, charged witli importuning, and had an additonal charge of being a roguo and a vagabond preferred against her. On the first charge she was sent to gaol for a month, and on the second six months. For drunkenness, Ethel Goldsmith was fined 205., in default threo days' imprisonment. Two first offenders were dealt with. A prohibition order was issued against Samuel Lawlor.
MSCELL'ANEOUS CASES. Rudolph Allen and Sydney Hunter were each fined M, wth costs 75., in default three days' imprisonment, on charges of hawking without licenses. For allowing cattle to wander, the following were fined :-George'H. Bowes, R. Chisholm, Mmy Fe&lsy, aiid William Norris jiin,, each fined 55., with costs is.; John Hamilton, fined 10., with costs 75.; and John Fyfe (two charges) fined i£l on each charge, with costs totalling; £1 4s. William Mallard was fined 10s., _ with costs 75., on a charge of riding Ins bicycle after dark without a light. A charge of giving an emergency stop signal in a tramcar at Kilbirnig on August 21 was, preferred against Stanislaus Astin, Who whs fined 10s., with court costs
For faOingto attend drill, Samuel Hogg and.Harry.Parker Todd were each fined 55., with costs 7s. . John Love was fined .£l, with costs is., for failing to send his child to school.
