A Press Association from Napier last night states that advice has been received by Mr. and. Mrs. N. Kettle, Napier, from the Base Records Office, AVellington, to the effect' that their son, Lieutenant Ferdinand A 7 oii Tempsky Kettle, had been wounded, not killed in action, as previously reported. The news came as a pleasant surprise to a large circle of his friends.

Sir Jolm.Findlay has received a cablegram stating that his eldest son, Lieutenant J. AVilfred Findlay, who.was invalided to England, is in hospital and rapidly recovering. Sir John Findlay does not know whether his son was wounded or is suffering from illness.

Dr. Frank D. Johnson advises his parents in AVellington that after doing medical work' at various camps in tho Old Country he was under AVar Office orders to proceed to the Mediterranean for duty, and went there towards the end of July. Dr. Johnson is another of the very large number of AVellington College old boys enlisted in Empire services at the front. Mr. A. P. Webster, late Inspector of the Bank of Australasia in New Zealand, lias been appointed chief inspector of the Bank of Australasia, with residence in Melbourne. 1 Sergeant George M'Aueny, .of Heads Road, Gonville, AVanganui, reported to be missing (probably killed) ■■ was a' brother of Mrs. AVelch, of Day's Bay, AVellington. 1 Long service and good conduct medals have been awarded the following members of tho New Zealand Defence Forces:—Gunner A. E. B. M'Cluskey, Corporal P. J. Walsh, QuartermasterSergeant T. AV. Page, Bombardier Harry Graham I'orteous. All are members of the Royal Now Zealand Artillery. Tho meritorious service; medal has been awarded Sergeant-Maior Artificer H. A. Campbell, also of tho Artillery.

Mr. Archibald. M'Callum, a prominent business man in Dunediu, died at Musselburgh on Monday at the age' of 79. The deceased gentleman was a native of Glasgow, and was brought up to the building trade. In 1860 lie arrived in Dunedin by the ship Pladda, and after trying his luck 011 the, Otago and West Coast goldfields he leased the Government sawmill at Makarewa, near Invercargill. Ever since then he had been in the timber business. For many years before bis death, he had been settled in Dunedin. For a year lie was Mayor of East Invercargill. His wife died 23, years ago. One of his four daughters is Mts. J. D. Sievwright, of Wellington.

Mr. Thomas'MacLarnie and Mrs. MacLarnie (Miss Bertha. Nicliolls), two talented American players, who are to succeed Mr. and > Mrs. Fred Niblo in Australia with J. >G. Williamson, Ltd., are through passeaigers from San Francisco to Sydney by tlie Maitai. -.-

Lieutenant Biss, of Martinborough, who goes into camp shortly, with tho Reinforcements, was farewelled by .the members of the Maryborough Tennis Club, of which lie is secretary, and presented with a handsome pair of prism binoculars .and a cheque, as a token of esteem. . > . ; .

On leaving the firm : of Messrs. Feist and Co., Carterton, in order to join the Reinforcements, Mr. E. V. Ellis was presented with a wristlet watch from his fellow employees and a cheque from the firm, accompanied with tlio best wishes for a safe return.

j Mr. Barrio Marschel, for a long time advertising manager and supervisor for the New Zealand Picture Supplies, Ltd., and moro recently manager of ihc Empress Theatre,- has resigned his position. Mr. Marschel, is one of the ablest and most popular men in the picture business. Yesterday afternoon tho Empress staff paid, a su-rpriso visit to tlio manager's office. when Mr. Clarke, chief operator, on behalf of the staff presented Mr. Marschel with a handsome leather writing case, suitably engraved, as a memento of appreciation of the kindly relations existing between the manager and his staff. Visitors staying at the' Albert Hotel aro: Mr. and Mrs. P. A. Bruford, and Mr. Wakemann, of Auckland; Mr. and Mrs. Davis, of Longburn; Mr. W.- 11. Stafford,- of Hastings; Mr. D.
