LADIES' HOCKEY TOURNEY
THIRD ROUND. Poverty Bay ... 3 Wairarapa ...... 2 Wellington ...... 2 Manawatu 2 Canterbury .... 1 Hawke's Bay... 0 The third round- of the New Zealand Ladies' Hookey Championship Tourney, •which was played on the Basin Reserve yesterday afternoon, produced threo most interesting matches. Tho Wellington girls played, a drawn game with Manawatu, after the fastest and mostinteresting game seen locally for a long time. Poverty Bay just managed to account for Wairarapa, while Canterbury had a win over Hawke's Bay after a hard-fought contest. Details of the games are as follow: — WELLIN GTON -MANAWATU. Tho meeting between Wellington and Manawatu was productive of a very even, well-played, and interesting contest. The home girls might have done better, however, had their halves played intelligently. All through the game tfcey showed a distressing tendency to lag behind. Miss Smith scored the .first goal of the game for Wellington, Misses Whalley and Green following this up by scoring for the northern team. The goal secured for Wellington in the second half by Miss Smith was the result of a penalty bully in Wellington's favour. Mr. J. C. Cusack, was ret'eree. CANTBRBURY-HAWKE'S BAY. After an even .and .vigorous game Canterbury secured a well-earned victory over Hawke's Bay, 1 defeating them by 1 goal to nil. Miss G. Barr was the scorer. The feature of the game was the splendid work of Canterbury's centrehalf, Miss Smith. Mossrs. Carver and Loader were the referees. POVERTY BAY-WAIRARAPA. Another very even game was that between Poverty Bay and Wairarapa, the former winning eventually by 3 goals to 2. Misses It. Malcolm, F. Hill, and B. Pearce scored for the winners, and Misses Knowles and Humphries for Wairarapa. Messrs. Empson and Wykes were the rofereeß. TO-DAY'S GAMES. To-day the tournament will be advanced another stage, when the following games will take place:—Poverty Bay v. Canterbury, Wellington v. Hawke's Ba.y, and Manawato v. Wanganui. _ The interest in the tournament is being well maintained, and fast, open games were witnessed. The gross, proceeds go to the Wounded Soldiers' Fund.
