NOTES AND COMMENTS
; [BT GLENCOE.I The fist payments for the-New Zealand Cup are most satisfactory, and - a total of 85 horses have 6tood their ground. The most notable defections are Sea Pink and Lord Mulifid, who are at present in Australia. Thp acceptance of Warstep is pleasing, as it shows that all going well m the meantime the Martian mare will'be'set to finish the job; which was only half completed last November. The . other dead-heater Indigo'hos also been paid up for. After racing at Ashburton, tie Tren-tham-trained Sap Dhft and Multoe will remain in. the south for the Geraldine meeting. , No favrci- than three of the entrants for the Geraldine Cup, Commotion, Cervulus, and Moddite, also figure in the . hurdle events at' the southern fixture. . As a result of the heavy rains which fell at Trentham recently the traoks.were on the heavy side on Saturday,, but still a good deal of galloping was done. One •of the most jleasing efforts of the morning was registered Dy the New Zealand Cup mare Sinapi6, who did really well in a six-furlong 6print with Maltegarde. Though she is looking in great heart the Charlemagne II filly Taringamutii is not galloping well, and will not be seen, at her best for some time to come. Last week Multegarde was tried over a. single 'hurdle a couple of times, but the display of the Trentham mare was not satisfactory. She will be given a school in company "this week. Pavlova, who is engaged in the New Zealand Cup, will make her firet.appearance this season at Otaki,. where she is engaged in the sprint events each day. Sho will also compete at the Hastings and Masterton meetings ljeforo going to Biccarton.. A. Oliver is to ride the bay mare in the Cup. The whole of the half-dozen' horses for the . big handicap at Ashburton this week'have been accepted for, and th« event bears a very open appearand. The only New Zealand .Cup candidate engaged is AH Ready. . The manner iu which Dan Cameron, rt'as handled in the Welter Hack Handicap at the Amberley Steeplechase Club's meeting did not meet with the approval of the stewards, who instituted an. inquiry into the matter. After an exhaustive investigation, the stewards resolved to disqualify-the rider, S. Cardwell, for twelve months. \ Mr. R. E. Harley has been appointed starter for the H&wke's Bay 'Jockey Club's Spring Meeting. The Fordell trainer T. Tilley has a big team engaged at' the Wangaaui Spring Meeting, which includes Mia. Cara, Protocol, Moutoa Queen, Interlude, Rinaldo, Sunbird, Ararat, and Bonny Helen; Three of these, in Sunbir<l. Bonny Helen, and Rinaldo, claim engagements ,in the New Zealand Cup, so their efforts at Wanganui will be followed with the closest interest, as being likely, to disclose Tilley's selected for.the big November race. Throe New Zealand" Oup candidates were racing at Marton on Wednesday, Bronk Delaval being third in the Maiden Plate, while Prince Laddo and Tangihou were unplaced in other events. They will all. have to improve a 10t.,t0 be worth considering at Riccarton. Reputation's work at Randwick , has found, him great favour with track watchers, and the New Zealandfcr now rankß as second favourite for the A.J.C. Metropolitan Handicap. So far nothing has been determined as to the holding of. a. meeting at Trentham ' next month, bij. it is probable that a definite decision will be come to at tho end of the present week after the arrival of Surgeon-General Henderson, who is to become Director of Medical Services, N.Z.M.C. The most promising steeplechaser seen ' out at Marton was the Foxton-owneit Master Strowan. He .scored in very convincing style on/Wedmesday, and at the Hunt Club meeting he started a solid favourite in tho Hack Steeples, but was unlucky enough to be run off by Katua, who subsequently scored. At the Durban (South Africa) Turf Club meeting lost month a hor.se named Billy Brown van second in a race, and returned his supporters well on towards the century. Considering the machine paid first, second, and third horses, Billy Brown's backers got a very nice return, .though whother tickets' were <£1 or IUS. is ■ not stated. At the present time Chortle and the other members of Mr. A. B. _Williams a team are located at Ixreemneadows, wheie they are to remain until the new stable at Ngatarawa is ready to receive them. Mr. George Morse, of Wanganui, hwj been appointed liandicaper to tne iuasterton Racing Club. Mr. William Hume has been elected a steward of tho Wairarapa Racing Unb in place of Mr. Alex. M'Kenzit'.whoJios retited and left the distl'ict. ; In iecognition of the latter's long connection ytli the club he has been made a life meinbei. FIXTURES. Sept. B—Dannevirke8 —Dannevirke B.C.
