Among thoso present was Her Excellency tho Countess of Liverpool. CANTERBURY-MANAWATU. Cauterbui-y and Manawatu were very evenly matcnod, and while tho latter combined woll and had a strong rearguard, the Canterbury team played with a grit and'detormination that severely tried their opponents. Tliere was early indication of tl'io strength of the Canterbury forwards and but lor the effectual olearing of Miss M'Sweeney, in-goal for the northern team, t-liey must have scored on two occasions. At length, after a particularly vigorous '. attaick, Canterbury registered tho first goal, per medium of Miss Peorce. Not a whit put-back, tho Manawatu forwards -worked hard to retaliate with' an evening goal, Cool and well combined forward work at last produced tho desired result, Miss Collihgwood scoring. The Manawatu supporters were jubilant when Miss Green followed this up i with another goal, placing Manawatu in the lead. Half-time came with Canterbury pressing vigorously. , There were some bright patches in the play on recommencement. Some good work among the forwards mado the possibility of Canterbury evening matters appear very likely, and it was really an excellent bit of work, by/Miss Greig (thou' left back) that led up to a score in thenfavour. She cleared the- ball-nicely and ■ with ft good, strong sliot sent to the forwards. They made good use of the ball and with a sure shot that the goal-keeper had no chance of blocking, Miss PeaTce scored.. Even play followed, but shortly Manawatu were prominent—very much so. Two goals were scored in qxnek succession, Misses Green and Collingwood scoring sploudidly.
