"SENSE OF SHAME"
-MAN WHO SHIRKS HIS DUTY. Writing from Gallipoli under date of July 13 to his parents at Kensington, Signaller J. Solomons says:— - "Had'l. not enlisted as early as'l did I would nevor have been able ,to walk along .a public- street •without being conscious of a sense of shame ; so,' you can see,'l.have tlio greatest pride,in being a. soldier of the First Australia.n Expeditionary Force. Out here, sittirig in my dug-out, on the slope of a hill, with v the roar : of guris and the screeching of shells that are; bursting,-with terrific force as though they are trying to drown the incessant rattle of musketry, and the rolling of the deadly machine-guns, one is apt to think of homel. It; is, terrible to witness such tragedies,as ou'e sees every day, hut brave men • who havo . fallen 1 will ever bo held in greater Tespept than ; the men who are eligible for service, but who have remained at .home to derive the. benefit of what sacrifices have been made. ' It, is a .rriatter of the utmost uncertainty when' developments' maytake place, and they may'necessitate the help of every man.' "One word more. Every man who shirks his duty, and does not answer tho call to'help his comrades, but 'stays .at ' homo in comfort and security, mil riot experience that feeling of pride when ; meeting his fellow-countrymen that will . come to tliose lvho return when the war ! is-'oyer."!.'--:'.
