SWIMMING
j REWARD FOR PROFICIENCY, J At present the boy or girt who demonstrates his or her capacity to restore animation in the apparently drowned by bringing the "patient" ashore and treating him to the prescribed course is entitled to a free season ticket to the Municipal Baths. This, is a concession to the Life-Saving Society as an inducement for young folk to acquaint themselves with the rules of life-saving in the case of the apparently-drowne,d. Before they can practice tlib art of life-saving, liowovor, It is incumbent that everyone should be a proficicnt swimmer, and to bring about a general desire for'swimming as something more than a mere recreation the Wellington Swimming Association is of opinion that the City Council coulcl give considerable encouragement if it would offer a concession to those boys and girls who are able to demonstrate that they can swim a certain distance. Mr. T. Shields suggests that any boy or girl who can swim, say, 500 yards might be given a season ticket for tlio baths. As soon as younger or less proficient swimmers see their friends gaining access to the baths free they are sure to make tlio effort to qualify for the concession, and the ultimate result will be a city of swimmers. It is the intention of the association to wait on the City Council on the point at an early date, ivitli a'view to haviu<* something done during tlio coming season.
