AN EXCITING CHASE
RECAPTURE-OF AN ESCAPED PRISONER. By Telegraph—Press Association. ' Wanganui, August 19. An habitual criminal named Jolin Henry Heath, who escaped from the Rete Aira prison camp on August 17, was recaptured • to-day by Constables Wilson and Doyle under exciting circumstances. In consequence of information received that a man resembling the prisoner had heen seen at Atake, 30 miles from Wanganui, two policemen procured a motor-car and motored towards that .district. At a bend on the road 18 miles from Wanganui tho police met the prisoner on horseback; the latter immediately spurred his horse and dashed past at full gallop, and after the delay in turning the car the police gave chase. The fugitive had a- big start, but after a race of three miles the ' motor-car overhauled him. The escapee then threw himself from the horse and dashed into the bush, where the constables chased and caught him. The prisoner was wearing a riding suit, which it was ascertained had been stolen from a settler's house at Karioi. The prisoner will be brought into court to-day, on a charge of theft and escaping from legal custody.
