THE OTAKI IN A HURRICANE
CARGO WASHED OVERBOARD. (By Telescarh.—Press Association.) Auckland, August 17. Tlio steamer- Otaki, which arrived from London to-day, received- tlie Banalla's "5.0.5." call when lire broke out on tlie latter vessel. The New Zealand liner stood by until informed that furflier asistance was not needed. Two days later, the Otaki encountered a hurricane lasting thirty-six' hours. Huge waves washed the decks every minute, and about two hundred packages of cargo stored on deck wero washed overboard. Tlie waves smashed in the door of the carpenter's shop, flooded nearly all the officers' rooms, and damaged many deck fittings, such as rails, ladders, etc. The lost cargo was 'mainly calcium carbide and varnish consigned to the Bluff.
