"MONSTROUS CRIMES"
-8 .. GRAND JURY'S PRESENTMENT. (By •ifelcerftph.--W-r.<n Assocmtlea.) Auckland, August 17. In the Supreme Court this morning the Grand Jury made a presentment to Mi*. Justice Cooper on the subject ,of offences against women, and expressed surprise that some attempt had not been made to deal with 6uch offences by legislation. The foreman of the jury spoke particularly of offences against 'baby, girls, saying: "These are atrocities which it is .difficult for the Grand Jurymen to regard with any degree of equanimity. Thfcy are monstrous' crimes." The Grand Jury thought tho punishment for such crimes should be made much more drastic. His Honour •thanked the jury, and assured them he would bring the matter before the Minister of Justice. He suggested at the same time that much could be done in the'jwajr of preventing such crimes by public vigilance..
