WOMAN'S WORLD

(Continued from page 2)

A Farewell Banquet,

A somewhat uncommon function took place at Mr. Cambridge's Rooms, Otano, on Saturday evening, wlien the ladies of Otane, duly chaperoned, entertained at a mock banquet the local men . who wore to leave this week to go into camp. Miss Lily M'Kay fulfilled the duties of president and a prominent feature of the gathering was the vet-eran-like ability displayed by the young hostesses in proposing the toasts. ,The toasts honoured were: "Tile King," "The Returned Troopers," "The Empire," "The Men at the Front," "The Men Compelled to Stay at Home," and "Our Guests," the proposers being Misses M'Kay, Blair, M'R-ae, Epps and Wodd. Suitable responses were made by Messrs. S. R. Steedman, A. Clark, S. Moore, P. J. Sefton and G. M'Kay. The toast of "Our Guests" was particularly well handled by Miss M'Kay, who also handed the guests of the evening a tiny mascot in the shape of a teddy bear as a token of the esteem in which they all held those offering their services to the country. The toast was respondod to by all local volunteers, also by Mr. J. Ford, a visiting volunteer from Wellington. Mr. G. L. Denniston, Belgian Consul at Dunedin, and Miss Denniston. are at present staying in Napier. The wedding took place at the residence of Mr. T. Compton (Masterton) yesterday morning of Miss P. A. Rayner to Mr. Oscar Pearson, of Feilding. The bride wore prey crepe de chine and n- violet hat, and the bridesmaid, Miss Compton (niece of the bride), wore pink voile. Mr. George M'Kenzie was best mau, and the ceremony was performed by the Rev. T. Halliday. . Mr. and Mrs. Overton Smith, who have been visiting England : and America, are expected to return to New Zealand by the Niagara. They intend making their home in Auckland.
