TAXI-DRIVER IN TROUBLE A taxi-driver named Thomas Murphy, who appeared before Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.JL, in tho Magistratp's Court yesterday, admittwl a charge of wearing a uniform without tho Qoycrnoi-'s permission, when ho was not a member of tho Defence Forces. Inspector- Itendroy explained that at-tached-to the. Defence Forces was a Motor Transport Gorp, the members of which wore a uniform and distinctive badge. Accused had purchased one of these uniforms, and by it had secured tho privilege from which the general public and his 'brother taxi-drivers wero debarred, that of driving in and out of Trentham Camp .at any time. At the time of tho offcuce the general public was excluded from the camp owing to the measles outbreak. A fine of £3, with costs 19s. was imposed; Aa the result of the recent visit of the police to an alleged sly-grog locality Eobert Henry Davenport was charged with (1) soiling liquor without a license to Constables Hedgman and Goulding; and (2) supplying liquor to soldiers in uniform for consumption off tho premises. Similar charges were preferred ajjainet Edmund Hughes. Henry Smith, and Joseph Spcnce. Smith was additionally charged with being tho occupier of unlicensed premises (at 21 Alma Lane), in which liquor was- sold. All wero remanded to August 23. . OTHER CASES.. Henry William Chapman, who after having had a meal at a restaurant, became abusive, refused to pay for tho meal, and finally brolte a window, .was fined 205., with costs 4s. on tho charge of breaking tho glass, and ordered to pay the cost of the same, Gs. He was convicted and discharged for drunkenness. Cargo broaching was alleged against a seaman off 'the Maknrini named Carl Gustave Eobert Hedlum, ths goods consisting of three bottles of rum. On tho application of Chief. Detective Boddam, Hedlum was remanded till to-day. Andrew Julius Finlay, represented by Mr. P. W. Jackson, was further remanded to August 23 on throo serious charges. Michael Saxtou was fined £5 with witness's oxpenses 4s„ ill default one month's imprisonment on a charge of indecency. Similarly charged Mary Hargreaves was remanded to Monday next. Joseph Kenny, for whom Mr. 15. G. Jellicoe appeared, was remanded to August 18 on a. chargo of using obscene language on Tinalcori Road. Foi\ drunkenness John M'Kinnon was fined £2, in default one month's imprisonment. .Tames O'Neil fined 205., or three days, nnd Cecil Bingham Clegg and Daniel M'Farlano each fined lfls. or -18 hours. Tea first offending inebriates were dealt with s MAINTENANCE CASES. Ernest Quaintnnce was ordered to pay ss. a week towards tho maintenance of hii child. As the result of an application by Michael ICubler, for tho variation of a maintenance order, the order was increased to 7s. Gd. per week. Arthur Blackett made an application fot discharge and separation order against Leiln. Blackett, tho application being granted.
