SUPREME COURT RE-TRIAL IN BETTING CASE A "BOOKIE'S" BUSINESS TIIO re-trial took place in tho Supremo Court yesterday, before His Honour tho Chief justico (Sir Robert Stout) in tho case in which James Hassall was charged that, at Greymouth, on May 22, ho conspired with some person unknown to defraud Phillip Byrno of sums of .£l6 and ,£B, and further, that ho did obtain such sums by means of false pretences. Mr. V. R. Meredith, Crown Prosecutor, conducted tho case, and accused was defended by Mr. T. M. Wilford. Ho pleaded not guilty to both counts. The evidence was similar to that given last week, when the jury failed to como to an agreement. Accused gave evidence on • his own behalf yesterday, and was subjected to a searching cross-examination. After a retirement of half an hour, the jury returned witlv a verdict that there was* insufficient evidence against accused. Ho was accordingly discharged. CIVIL AND DIVORCE LIST. A sitting of the Bankruptcy Court was held yesterday, His Honour the Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout) presiding. __ Stewart John M'Donald, Johnsonville, settler (Mr. W. Perry) applied for discharge. Bankrupt' filed in 1911, alter having failed in business as a s J?T? r keeper. The estate liad paid Is. lHcl. in tho £ to unsecured creditors. Tho creditors asked for ss. " ~ , • His Honour granted, tho discharge,' as tho matter 'had. been now standing over for four years, and bankrupt haa a wito and family to- support. , . On the application of Mr. P. J. OHegan a discharge was granted to Joseph Paul Davis, of. Wanganui, jeweller, who filed in May, 1910. No opposition, was - offered by • tho Actmg-Ofhcial Assigneo (Mr. S. Tansley). Cluing Tack, fruiterer, who filed m 1910, was examined. Mr. O'Regan, who appeared in support of the application for discharge, said that bankrupt had been earning very little money, imd he had met with domestic trouble. The discharge was granted. ... Tho Bankrupt Court -will sit.again m Wellington on November 15.
