NOTES AND COMMENTS

. [Br Glencoe.] ■ Weights for the Now Zealand Cup. are due on Wednesday. Entries for the. Dannevirke meeting close on. Monday., Nominations for the Wanganni Jockey Club's Spring Meeting ore due on Monday evening. Kcw has been purchased by Mr. J. Heiinah, and if space can be secured forhim the chestnut gelding will be shipped to Sydney by' the Manuka ou Thursday next.' Kew's late owner, Mr. H. M. Speed, is shortly going to the front. It is more than likely that Morning will be nominated for the Danneviito Steoplechase, but considering the weight likely to bo allotted the gelding, ho may not be required to take his place in the 'field. There was some talk last week of entering him for the steeplechases at Randwick, but this has now been abandoned.

Booligal, runner-up to Battleship in the Australian Steeplechase, finished third in the National at Flemirigton last month. As Booligal' carried 12st. 51b., his performance on Saturday was a good one, but it is probable that those who contend that Victoria is . weak in jumpers this year are speaking correctly. Mr. F. Armstrong, owner of Morning, returns home to Akitio by boat tcnlay.

Weights for the Marton jockey Club's Spring Meeting are due on Wednesday. Mr. H. Coyle has been reappointed Uajidicapper to the Hawko's Bay Jockey Club, but so far the appointment of starter hue not been made public. . >

. No fewer than, three runners in tlie Grand National Steeplechase this year have done utility work in the shafts of l'arm vehicles during their career. These compriso Tim Doolan, Captain Macky.and The Brewer.

Tho. Grand National Steeplechase'winner Ngatoa is by Ngatitoa, from a Leolantis mare. His sire, Ngatitoa was bred in the Wairarapa district, by Flintlock (Musket— Georgie), sire of Plain Bill, etc., from Blue Bell, by Young Grandmaster (Grandmaster—Cobweb), a mare imported to Wellington from New South Wales. Both Blue Bell and Ngatitoa we.ro raced in the Wairarapa district but neither was a success on the turf. Ngatitoa did a season at the stud in Canterbury, and was afterwards purchased by Sir. Handley, .of Paeroa, where the Grand National winner was bred.

A new departure was made at Iticcarton on Tuesday, when the steward present at tho start instructed the starter to line W. Adams, the rider of Haskaynt. for breaking' through tho barrier. ,T. O'Shea, who rode Encore, was lined by the starter for a similar offence. It would be interesting to know under what rule tho steward hod power to order the -indiction of tho fine. v

Mr. F. Armstrong;, who bred Hurakia, winner of the National Hurdles, has a full brother to horse running out on his station. . He is to be put into training (forthwith. It wa9 intended to ship Colonel Soult to Sydney yesterday, but the trip lias been, postponed for a few weeks. ' Tho Auckland representative is already at a 'short figure for tho Metropolitan Handicap, to be run on the second day of tho Australian Jockey Club's. Spring Meeting.

ITurakia, winner of the Grand National Hurdles, was purchased from Mr. E. Kemp last autumn for 200 guineas. l?ov soino weeks it looked wj if Mr. F. ,T. Lysnar had got none the best of the deal, but at length Hurakia rail seoond to Doon at Hastings, won tho following day. and followed this up by a victory at Napier the following week. Ho was then shipped to Gisborne, and was voted vevv unlucky in being' defeated by Black Northern. This was his last race until he won tho Grand National Hurdles last. week. Tho chestnut gelding is a bold jumper, and this has assisted him to win his race*

11. would appear ne if the lameness contracted by Royal Arms at Iticcarton is not very serious, as the Taranaki horse has been, entered for the Marton meeting next month. , .

So far there has only been a slight advance on the prices of the famous Victor Cheese Vats, and factories .are now ordering in view of a possible, further increase. Various causes will shortly greatly increase the cost, but orders received now will be delivered in rotation and at present prices. Albert J. Parton Car£jac£nn.(—; i ; ......
