THE CALL FOR MEN

j . ' GREAT CHANCES EARLY PASSAGE TO THE FIRING LINE For some little while recruiting in Wellington City ami Suburbs has slackened owing to lack of immediate) opportunity for the men to get into training and proceed to t.lic front. The fact is that recruiting was so lively in tlm City and suburbs a few months ago that tlie men faf outnumbered the requirements, and when this became known many men, desirous of serving with the colours, refrained from enlisting, because they considered that a great deal of time would elapse between the date of their enlistment and the date of. their donning the khaki. Since then, however, the system of calling up men from th° various districts in proportion to tiie number on the books of the district lias been at work, and Wellington's waiting list has been heavily cut do.wn. The City office has now only about 500 men on the waiting list, and this number must bo depleted in a very little while, so that Wellington is fast nearing the time when men may be able to enter camp with the first draft that goes in after they enlist. New battalions have been offered, so more men are wanted, and all things have tended to greatly increase the opportunities of men desirous of getting to the firing line with' a minimum of delay. Now that the chances have so improved the daily rate of enlistment will probably return to what it -was a few months . Next week 3500 men are to be sent into camp. In October the military authorities will call-up'sooo men in olio big batch, and by Christmas there will be 10,000 men in training at the one time. Previously there have never been more than about 7000 training at onco in New Zealand, so intending recruits may gather from these figures how greatly the opportunities have been increased. ' L ATEST .RECRUITS. The following a.ro the latest recruits whoso names have been enrolled at the City Recruiting Office: — Thomas 'Casey, B Company, Fifth Regiment, clerk, City. Horace Geo.
