DINING CARS ON THE CONTRACT SYSTEM.
Sir, —Kindly allow ma space for a few remarks re dining-car waiters. 1 am a pretty constant traveller, and I liana noticed on frequent occasions that onehalf of tTie waiter® would have been more than sufficient to do what was required. I can quits understand when ft number of soldiers get on board a train at any special point that it would cause a rush, and to . cope with same there quite likely would be some delay, but especially . through the winter months I would suggest that thero "should be less waiters than more. In conclusion, I would like to say that dining-cars already cost too much to run, and I would suggest running the dining-cars on the control system, and then, instead of the dining-car being run at a loss as at present, they would at once be run at a great profit. Surely wo have a good object-lesson from the late Manawatu Railway Company, who found it paid well to run a fining-car on their mixed passenger gootls train in from Wellington to Palmerston, and' vice versa.', daily ( the car was run under the control system), and hero wo are to-day under our dailywage system, and the Minister of Railways will tell you that none of the dining-cars are paying, houce he cannot see his way cloar to place a diningcar on the Napier 'daily express, and this alone is a standing disgrace to our fair Dominion. For over twenty years the New Plymouth express has had a dining-car, but never has the Napier express' had even a trial of a car. Trusting somo other better and more able person will take this item up —I am, etc., F. G. RYDER. Otaki, August 12, 1915.
