A conference in regard' to the question of munitions and- general supplies for tho Defenco Department took place yesterday between the Minister of Defence (tho Hon. J. Allen) and tho, Minister of Munitions and Supplies (the Hon. A.. M. Myers). A statement in regard to tho matter was made last' night by Mr. Allen. "Mr. Myers has taken over from me," said Mr. Allen, "the board which was set up last week 'to deal with tho provision of clothing, equipment, forage, and food supplies, for tho forces. Ho has also taken over from. .1110 the, coutrol of the matter of 'munitions which. I had been going into with tho object of ascertaining whetlmr it is possible to manufacture munitions in the Deminion. - I shall 'hand over - the information that' I have collected to Mr.' Myers. 1 1 cannot say whether it will be possible to manufacture munitions in New Zealand, beyond the small arms ammunition, which is turned out by tho Colonial Ammunition Coippany. "The Defenco Department,, will irepresent to Mr. Myert and the Board of Supplies what our requirements aro in regard to boots, clothing, equipment, and stores, and Mr. Myers will be advised 011 tho question by the board. The probabilities aro that tenders may be called for the supplies unless other satisfactory arrangements with the manufacturers can be made. A contract has just been, let or is about to be lot for three months' supplies of clothing and hoots, bnt if wo send the two extra battalions that we have offered to the Imperial Government we will need more sunplies than have been tendered for.; We will in such oase have to supplement tho three months' supplies, and at tho expiration of that timo the whole question of future supplies will have to bo dealt with."
