London, August 9, 9.35 p.m. 1 Sir John French reports"Since August 1 artillery on both sides has been active in tho Ypros region, the advantage of these exchanges being with us. "This morning, after a successful artillory bombardment—the French on our left co-operating effectively, wo attacked the trendies at Hooge which were captured by tile enemy oil July 30. All wero retaken, and. following up-oiir success we progressed north and west of Hooge, extending tho front trenches captured to 1200 yards. , "Our artillery derailed and.sot on fire .five trucks of a German train. {We captured three officers, 124 men, and two machine-Eujis."- ' , ' . ATTACKS ON THE FRENCH FRONT. ; Tho Higjli Commissioner reports:— >'• London, August' 9, 5 p.m. •"On Sunday xiight. a German attack on Souchez station, in the Neuvillo sector, and on the road to Binarville was repulsed. "In the Vosges another attack on the Allies' position at Linge completely failed; there were considerablo German losses." THE LIE DIRECT, SERIATIM FRENCH CORRECTION OF ENEMY'S COMMUNIQUES. The High Commissioner reports:— ; London, August 9, 3.30 p.m. A French official correction of the German communiques of August 2 and 7 states:— ' "In the Argonne region all the German attacks were repulsed with heavy losses to< the enemy, except on one point,_ where a portion of an advanced trench was lost. Tho Germans also claimed double tho true number of prisoners. "In Lorraine it was a German , and not a Frenoh reconnaissance that was repulsed. - . "In the Vosges .region German reverses are persistent, the French capturing the important ridges of Lingekopf and Barrenkopf. "It was not a French aeroplane which was shot down, as reported by tho Germans." ,
BIG. AIR RAID ON SAARBRUCK. ' (Rec, August 10, 10 p.m.) ' • Paris, August 10. Official.—"Tlio situation is fairly quiet along the wholo front. There lias been cannonading at various points, and Reims was bombarded. "A squadron of thirty-two bombardment aeroplanes, oscortcd by aeroplanes for pursuit .purposes, left this morning to bombard tlio station and war factory at Saarbruck.. The weather was unfavourable, tho valleys being shrouded in mist, but twenty-eight of the machines' reached tho goal, and dropped 161b. shells. The escorting aeroplanes kept off the enemy aviators. Numerous column's of smoke were observed." ; ' GERMAN OFFICIAL COMMUNIQUE. By Telegraph—Press Association—Oosyrizlit Amsterdam, August 9. r A German communique, states: In our battle with aeroplanes near Dammarkirche, Yprcs, Harboney, and Gondrescange we destroyed four aeroplanes, including two belonging to the squadron which bombarded the open town of Saarfirucken without causing military damage, but killing nine citizens." HEAVY ARTILLERY FIRING HEARD NEAR BIXMUDE (Rec. August 10, 8:40 p.m.) Amsterdam, August 10. The Dutch newspaper. Telegraaf, states that heavy artillery fire, eaualling in intensity the big \ser battles, nas been heard in the direction of l)ixniude. The firing continued all day without a second's silence. 1 THREE HUNDRED THOUSAND STEEL HELMETS. , . ~ , . ± . - Paris, August 9. The. troops are already furnished with _ three hundred thousand steel helmets, painted £rey, which are hardly visible at a distance. Already specimen casques, received from the fr° n * after undergoing the enemy's fusillade, bear marks of bullets which would have killed mean wearing the ordinary kepis.
