A terrific fire early destroyed lialf tho section. The remainder continued to 1 advance, and when ready for the final dash there were only seventeen survivors. Grenades further reduced the number to eleven. These, headed by Lieutenant Martell, sprang, over the parapet, killing all in the trench and losing another man. Tho remainder scouved tlio shelters and communicating trendies, killing all the registers. Many of the Germans liowled for mercy. Altogether Liout. Martell's party killfed 77, took prisoner 38 wounded men and 87 not wounded. General Jofl're decorated the heroes.
