RUSSIA'S ORDEAL
WHAT HER PROMINENT CITIZENS THINK
A UNITED NATION
ir Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright .(Rec. August 0, 9.50 p.m.) _ London, August 9. Dr. Dillon, tho "Daily Telegraph's" Mrrospondent, lias received communications from prominent Russians, declaring that despite tlio fact that the'invasion of .Hussia has begun in grim earnest. tho reverse has its compensations. "It has raised tho political temperature many degrees, and will do more than piles of "Orange Books" and appeals to.bring the Duma and tho Government into lino; it will i'uso tho layors of tho population into a compact and patriotic nation, and already it has stimulated tho torpid elements in the country to a resolve to remedy the deficiencies. "Not since tho Napoleonic invasion has there been such a revival, resulting in the one fixed purpose—to defeat tho enemy of the human race. The check has permanently destroyed tho barriers separating the peoplo from the Government, and is'accelerating tho political and social regeneration of Russia, which will henceforth take her place among the free peoples of the world. She may be trusted implicitly to fulfil her promises to hor peoples." Other Russians _ unstintedly pay tributes to tlio brilliant achievements of tlio .Anglo-French drives, but say that they must take a,bigger share in tho common burden. Russia, temporarily, . is immobilised, and tho absorbing question is, what new element will come into being? Bulgaria's co-operation would give us Constantinople in less than a month. Bulgaria won't'march unless, her claim to Macedonia is recognised, and Serbia refuses to dispossess herself, 1 oven for compensation which would bo worth three Macedonias to her political prestige and economic strength.
"TO THE URALS, IF NEED BE." (Rcc. August 9, 3.30 p.m.) petrograd, August 9. !At a muting of the conimittco, under General Gutchkoffs's leadership,' which is organising tho industries for war, there were representatives from all parts,- and patriotic speeches were delivered. , M. Riabouchinsky, a millionaire from Moscow, said: "Wo shall retire, if necessary to the Urals, but wc shall fight to the last.. Tho man who talks against war to tlio knife ought to be knocked oil the head."
