SOME PEETINENT REMAEKS. (,3y Tdeerasli.—l'rose Association," Whangarei, August 9. Pointed remarks were mado by Mr. Chadwin, J.P., at Whangarei, to-day when six first offenders wero_ before him. In convicting and fining each 10s.. ho declared that the Government now could not bo cxpectcd to look after first offenders. If they could spend money on drink, they could be made to contribute to the revenue. It was a groaty pity to sec as first offenders young men who might be serving their country.
