TEPID BATHS

A NEW CITY LUXURY

NEARLY COMPLETED Tlioro lias been a good deal of tall; and deliberation from time to time upon the question of instituting in Wellington a tepid swimming bath somewhat akin to that which has been so successfully established in Christchurch. It is not perhaps generally known that in a vorv short time there will be in Wellington quite an up-to-date tepid bath of fairly respectable dimensions. And it has fallen to the Committee of the Boys' Institute to provide this refreshing example of "deeds, not words." In their fine new building at Mount Cook, noiv within measurable distanco of completion, provision was made for a. topid bath, and the project having been gono oil'with, it is now only a. matter of weeks beforo the bathers of the city will bo disporting themselves in. the clear, warm water of a white-tiled, covered in swimming bath of some 33 1-3 yards long by about ten yards in width. The bath building is part of the larger establishment, being immediately behind the administrative block. The concrete work lias been practically finished, and the tiles (white) liavo been laid, and but for the delay-in the delivery of the laigo filtering apparatus, necessary, it is said, to make tho Wellington water in such volume comparatively clear, the water could have been run in to the bath almost immediately. Tho denth of water when the bath is full will rango from about seven feet to somewhere about threo feet. The limited width of the section on which tho building stands unfortunately made-it a little difficult to provido as liberal accommodation for spectators as was desired, but, nevertheless, a good deal of space is available. A gallery containing two rows of seats is being erected along either side,- while at each end tliero will bo tiers of seats. Between tho edgo of tlio bath and tho side walls there is sufficient room for a. narrow folding seat and reasonable width of pathway. Dressing?rooms are erected at either end of the bath building, being quite out of sight of anvono seated in tho gallery. Such fittings and appointments usually connected with swimming baths _as spring-boards and other joy-provoking devices have not yet been fitted up, but they doubtle'ss shortly will be. The water for tho bath will, of course, be obtained 'from the ordinary city mains and will be heated and filtered with the latest dovices. Tho bath will be thrown open to the public at certain hours of each day.
