- 6 'ALLEGED FORGERY. Before Mr. D. G. A. Cooper, S.M., in tlie Magistrate's Court yesterday, Theodore Ritchcy Joyce was charged with' forging tlio liamo of -J. A. Dohcrty to aii endorsement on tho back of a cheque for £7 2s. Gd. Mr.. T. M. Wilford defended the accused. The evidence showed that Joyce, who bad enlisted, and was waiting to go into camp, had" been given temporary employment as abookkeeper by Doherty. AVhen Joyce had committed the offence he was drunk and had been arrested primarily for such. Mr. Wilford submitted that the case was one which the Magistrate could himself reasonably deal with under tho facts disclosed by the evidence. This bad shown that Joyce practically did not know what he was doing when ho committed the offence. The Magistrato replied that Judges had held drunkenness was no excuse for crime, and in the face of this ho must commit accused to tho Supreme Court. Accused pleaded not guilty, Mr. Wilford intimating this plea would bo reversed to guilty later, and was committed to tho Supremo Court for trial. Bail was allowed as before, in £25. MISCELLANEOUS CASES. Arthur Jones, alias Ross, who was arrested by Constable Wilson on a." charge of using obscene language at New Brighton, Christchurch, in March last, was remanded to appear at Christchurch on Monday. Kate Brady and Robert Lavall were each sentenced to one month's imprisonment for indecency. For insobriety, Isidoro Jacobus was sentenced to one month's imprisonment, and for breaking his prohibition order fined £1, in default three days' imprisonment. Four first offenders wero dealt with. Evelyn Butler was remanded to August 9 on a charge of drunkenness. Two informations were preferred against Charles Jolly: (I) Supplying milk from unlicensed premises, and (2) supplying milk from an unlicensed vehicle. Mr. J. O'Shea. appeared for the City Corporation, and Mr. A. W. Blair for the defence. After hearing tho evidence, tho Magistrato dismissed tho information, on the ground that Jolly had not been proved to be the owner of either the promises or vehiclo in question. Costs wero not allowed. For breaches of tho vehicular by-laws the following were penalised as mentioned:—Victor Smith, Charles Numi, and Claude Cornfortli, each fined 205., 1 with costs 75.; Louis Cooper, 10s., with costs 75.; Claud Malcolm Banks, fined 55.. with costs 7s. . Thomas Murphy, who failed to stop the motor-car ho was driving when Constable Marks signalled to him to do so, was fined 205., with costs 13s. Robert I.'ullar was fined 205., with< costs 75., on a charge of selling jewellery in a vacant section adjoining R.iddiford Street, and obstructing the traffic by allowing people to congregate there. Mairgaret Daley was convicted and discharged on a cbargo of allowing offensive rubbish to remain on her premises at 64 Daniel Street. Stephen Bray was fined 10s., witli costs 75., for allowing livo stock to wander. Of a large number of defence cases set down for hearing, only olio was proceeded with, that of John Francis Whitman. who was fined £-1, with costs 75., in default fourteen days' military detention, on a charge of failing to attend camp.
