METAL INDUSTRY DEALINC WITH GERMAN CONTROK By Telegraph—Press Association—ConyrigM Melbourne, August 6. The Attorney-General (Hon. W. M. Hughes),_ referring to the metal industries, said the only way to deal with, the situation was to destroy all German influence wherever it existed. This was the Government's policy, which would bo pursued -unflinchingly. Referring to the cable message with regard to the Australasian section of tlie London Chamber of Commerce relative to trading with enemy countries after tlio war, Mr. Pearce said thoy, wore not averso to patriotism if it means no loss. Patriotism which lags behind profits is a cancer which must bo cut out at all hazards. ALIEN ENEMY'S ATTEMPT AT ESCAPE. (Reo. August 6,11.40 p.m.) „ Sydney, August C. William Henry Damman was _ com* mitted for trial on a charge cf being ail alien enemy; he left the Commonwealth without the permission of the Minister of Defence, and Frederick Dietz was committed for aiding and abetting Damman by purchasing the ticket with which he travelled to Auckland. In the meantime the Censor intercepted a letter showing that Damman intended to escape to Amorica, but tho New Zealand military authorities arrested and returned him. , ENEMY CONTRACTS AND COMi PANIES. Walter William Torr, ex-manager of a branch of tho Government Savings Bank, lias been remanded on charges of stealing ill February last £3400 of the' bank's money. At a meeting of the National Council of Women it was decided to approach the Federal Government to take a census which- puts the energies of women in tabulated form with a view of their employment in the National Service. _ It is considered they could help the nation in many ways, if organised.
