DECLARATION DAY
■ENTHUSIASM IN THE SUBURBS. A very enthusiastic meeting was held in tihe ! Miramar . Town Hall on Wednesday evening in, connection with Declaration Day, The Mayor of Miramar (Mr. F. Townsend) occupied the chair, and delivered' tin interesting address, and other speakers were Councillors Hawthorne and Stone, and ex-Councillor Brodie. The Miramar Band attended, and rendered several patriotic airs. The resolution, put to the meeting was carried witii' acclamation, and the gathering . sang the National Anthem in conclusion. At the meeting in the Karori Borough Chambers thero was a good attendance. The Mayor (Mr. P. G. Burn) presided,- and tho other speakers were tho Rev. Standage and Councillors J. G. Raine and Hamilton. The resolution was carried'with acclamation, and the National Anthem was sung heartily in conclusion. A very enthusiastic meeting was held iu the Khandallah Public Hall, the Mayor (Mr. C. C. Crump) presiding. Mr. R. A. Wright, M.P., gave a careful outline of the causes leading up to tho war; Mr. J. H. Richardson referred to, the war of 100 years ago, when Britain did her part in opposing the aims of Napoleon, just as she was doing he'.- .* duty now in opposing the iVorld ambition of the Kaiser;- ancl Mr. E. Cowles mentioned the grand work dono by the nurses. The other 'speakers were the Rev. J. Gumming, Messrs. J. 6 Harkness, A. Budd, arid W. Appleton. During the evening musical items were given by Messrs. Crump (2), Miss Grumi> and Mr. F. Twiss, and encores were insisted upon. The resolution was carried by acclamation, and the National Anthem was sung in conclusion. Cheers were also given for the British forces. • An enthusiastic meeting was held at Petono in the open air, patriotic addresses heing delivered by the Mayor (Mr. J. W. M'Ewan) and Councillors List, Cox. Brocklebank, and Mri J. Piper. The Municipal Band' aiid ' the Senior Cadets paraded. The var declaration resolution was submitted l and unanimously carried amidst cheers. Patriotic choruses were sung, and a very successful gathering terminated with the singing of ''God 'Save the King." Later the. resolution was carried by large audiences at the Lyceum and Empiro Theatres. At Lower Hutt, the Mayor (Mr. H. Baldwin) presided, over a well-attended meeting heldi in the Council Chambers, and moved the war declaration resolution. Dr. Mason seconded the resolution, and tho Revs. W. Beckett and J. M'Caw, and Messrs. E. P. Bunny .ind T. Peterkin supported the • motion, which was carried with acclamation, tho audience rising cn masse and siiiging tlio National Anthem. Before the ordinary business of tho Management Committee of tho Wellington Football Association was, proceeded with on Wednesday the war declaration resolution was carricd, all members present standing. . A large and-enthusiastic meeting'of members of the Commercial Travellers' and Warehousemen's Club was held at the Club House on Wednosdny afternoon. Tho president, Mr. George Pirie, presided, and\lelivered an enthusiastic speech appropriate to the occasion of tho first anniversary of the declaration of war. The- declaration of war resolution, proposed by Mr. W. J. Bridson, vice-presi-dent, and seconded by Mr. F W. Manton, vice-president, was carriod. Several speakers supported tho resolution, which was carried most enthusiastically. Tho meeting concludcd with tho singing of tho National Anthem and 1 "Rule Britannia;" Tho following resolution was carricd at Wednesday's sitting of tho conforenco of Chambers of Commerce: —"That this conference of Now Zealand Chambers of Commerce, representing the commercial interests of Now Zealand, in expressing its loyalty to tho Throno on this the anniversary of the day on which war was declared, records its determination to do all in its power to assist tho Government iu organising and using to the fullest extent _all_ the resourcescf the Dominion to aid in continuing tho war until it is brought to a. successful issue."
